Ba'asyir cleared of terrorism conviction

The lunacy and stupidity of this country absolutely astounds me more and more each day. I guess we can expect the Bali Bombers to be released next. Absolutely sickening.

JAKARTA (Antara): Supreme Court Thursday overturned a conviction against cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir on conspiracy charges in the 2002 Bali bombings.

The verdict clears his name since he has already served his two and a half year sentence.

"The verdict today upholds Ba'asyir's judicial review," German Hoediarto, the presiding judge of the Supreme Court, who chaired hearings of Ba'asyir case, was quoted by Antara news agency as saying Thursday.

Ba'asyir's lawyer Mahendra Datta said his client has received the report of the Supreme Court's verdict.

According to Mahendra, Ba'asyir responded the verdict, by saying "Thank God (Alhamdulillah). It (the decision) is Allah's wish. I only follow His wish."

Mahendra called on the South Jakarta Court to immediately execute the Supreme Court's decision, by making a public announcement "Ba'asyir is innocent."

South Jakarta District Court found Ba'asyir guilty of a "conspiracy" to commit the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings, which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians. He was acquitted on the more serious charges of direct involvement in the Bali attack and in the bombing of the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, which killed 12 people in August 5, 2003.

The cleric has maintained his innocence and denounced the allegations as a plot by Washington to silence his campaign for Islamic law.
