Police to try to prevent Poso suspects from escaping Indonesia

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Police will continue to prevent Poso riot suspects from fleeing to other countries, National Police Chief Gen Sutanto told newsmen after attending the commemoration of National Heroes Day at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetary here on Friday.

"We are ready to cooperate with various countries in our bid to prevent the suspects from fleeing to other countries," he said.

He made the statement in response to the question on whether Indonesian police would cooperate with their counterparts in the Philippines and Malaysia to prevent the Poso riot suspects from fleeing to those countries.

However, Sutanto expressed hope that the suspects would voluntarily surrender to law enforcers rather than being arrested by the police.

"We will continue to hunt them unless they surrender," Sutanto said, adding that the police did not set a deadline for their arrest.

My suggestion to General Sutanto is to let the Christian Brimob from North Sulawesi hunt the fugitives. That way there will be no escapees allowed by sympathetic Muslim police. Fear of being captured by Christian members of Brimob will be enough to have most fugitives surrender.
