Police have identified the killers

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - National Police Chief General Sutanto said here on Monday the police had already indentified the persons who killed Reverand Irianto Kongkoli in Palu, Central Sulawesi, earlier in the day. Speaking to reporters after attending a closed-door meeting with the Poso Team at the House of Representatives (DPR) building, he said "we are now trying to locate them." He said he could not yet say anything about the motive behind the murder. "We cannot make guesses about this. A team of investigators is now working to uncover it," he said. The chairman of the DPR`s Commission III, Trimedya Pandjaitan, meanwhile, criticized the police for performing poorly in ensuring security. "After the execution of Tibo and his associates we already warned of its possible impact on security conditions. We warned it was not impossible that the execution would lead to excesses in East Nusa Tenggara or Central Sulawesi," he said. The incident (the killing of the religious figure) only demonstrated the police`s poor performance, he said. "The performance of the police`s intelligence is also poor. If their intelligence was strong, it would not have happened," he said. He said the incident had occurred just two months after the execution of Tibo and his associates and it involved a religious figure who according to information he had received had had close relations with Tibo and his associates and had often served as their advocate. Trimedya said he wondered if this was the motive behind the incident. The politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) also talked about the possiblity of the perpetrators wishing to incite Christians so that they would take revenge. Therefore, he called on the police to remain alert, especially during the Islamic post fasting holiday of Idul Fitr as well as Christmas later.
