Vatican says executions are a defeat against humanity

Vatican City (ANTARA News) - The execution of three Indonesian Christians for inciting violence against Muslims was a "defeat for humanity", Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said Thursday. "It is very sad and painful news. Every time capital punishment is used is a defeat for humanity," said Lombardi, spokesman for Pope Benedict XVI. Lombardi told the ANSA news agency he was disappointed that efforts to stop the executions by various organisations, and by the pontiff himself, had fallen on deaf ears. "I'm sorry that the efforts made by various organisations, among them Sant'Egidio, did not succeed," he said, referring to the Rome-based religious community. The three men were executed by firing squad in Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi province, their lawyer said, after they were convicted of inciting violence against Muslims in 2000.
