Prosecutors reject Tibo et al's last requests

Palu, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The Central Sulawesi public prosecutor`s office has rejected the four last requests of Fabianus Tibo, Dominggus da Silva and Marinus Riwu who are scheduled to be executed for involvement in the May 2000 incident in Poso, on Thursday (midnight) or early Friday. The prosecutor`s rejection was disclosed by Father Jemmy Tumbelaka, the threesome`s religious counsel, after he had visited the Central Sulawesi public prosecutor`s office where he was received by a member of the executors` team, Agus Setiawan. Earlier, through Father Tumbelaka, Tibo et al had forwarded their last four requests one of which was that their bodies be laid in state at the St Mary Church for one day before burial. Tibo and Marinus had also asked that their bodies be buried in Beteleme village, Mori Atas subdistrict, Morowali district, while Dominggus wanted his body returned to his family in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara province, for burial there. The convicts also asked that their execution be witnesed by Joseph Suwathan (bishop of Manado, N Sulawesi), Father Jemmy Tumbelaka (for the St Theresia parish in Poso), Father Melky Toreh (for the St Mary parish in Palu) and Roy Rening (lawyer for Tibo and his associates). Their fourth request was that they be allowed to convey a special message to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono through mass media on many people`s rejection of their execution. All of their requests were rejected by Prosecutor Agus Setiawan who said the authority to handle the convicts up to their burials was in the hands of the state (the executors team). In response to the rejection of the Central Sulawesi public prosecutor`s office, Father Tumbelaka said he would wait for further developments and if the executors team had really turned down Tibo et al`s requests, he would resign as their spiritual adviser.

Would these men's last requests been turned down if they were Muslims? What kind of inhumane people are we dealing with? God has final judgement on all. That is our only solace. The real killers, the people responsible for the conflict, the prosecution team including Agus Setiawan, and people like Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh and Central Sulawesi Police Commissioner Badrodin Haiti who have tried to push the execution through, and even President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who has the power to do the right thing and stop the executions so the trial can be re-opened, will all have to stand before God one day and answer for their actions. That is our only solace.
