Police reject decapitation for Bali Bombers

The Republic of Indonesia National Police (Polri) rejected the request of three death penalty convicts of the Bali Bombing I case, Imam Samudra, Amrozi and Ali Gufron alias Muchlas for the method of death be changed to decapitation. Inspector General Paulus Purwoko, Polri spokesperson, said the legal system in Indonesia does not acknowledge that kind of punishment. “So we are not fulfilling their punishment request,” Paulus told reporters, Tuesday (26/9) at his office. Imam Samudra and the other convicts, via the Muslim Legal Defense Team (TPM), plan to propose a judicial review on State Decree No.2/1964 on the death penalty execution procedure to the Constitutional Court. The death penalty execution by firing squad is regarded as very painful. “After being shot, it generally takes two minutes before the person dies. Our clients ask to be decapitated,” said Mahendradata, TPM Head.
